ROCK ISLAND -- The Augustana Vikings men's soccer team will return to Thorson-Lucken Field on Saturday, September 16 to host the Fontbonne Griffins in a non-conference showdown.
Augie enters the weekend 0-4-1 on the season, recently earning a scoreless draw with Illinois College on the road on Tuesday. The Augie defense held strong in the first half after seeing eight shots to the team's two. Starting goalkeeper
Benjamin Samuelson picked up a save in net, while team was credited for the other, to keep the score at 0-0 after 45 minutes of action.
Jimmie Kucaba and
Ben Statz both fired strikes for the Vikings early in the period, but resulted in saves for the Blueboys.
Augustana's defense saw another onslaught of shots from the home team in the second half as the Blueboys posted an 11-2 advantage in that category. The Vikings were able to limit the attempts on Samuelson, allowing just three shots on target through the final 45 minutes.
Daniele Meloni and
Giovanni Bordini each posted shots for Augie in the half, but each were stopped by the Illinois College keeper. All four of the Vikings' shots in the game were on the mark.
Fontbonne currently sits with a 1-3-1 overall record, recently stopping a three-game losing streak with a 0-0 tie against Millikin. The Griffins opened the season with a 3-1 victory over Maryville, but three straight losses ensued before their recent outing against the Big Blue. Fontbonne has one common opponent with Augie this season in Illinois College, which was a 3-0 defeat at home. The Griffins ended last season with a 7-7-8 record.
The Vikings have never lost to the Griffins, posting a 3-0-2 record in the all-time series. Saturday will be the first encounter between the two programs since 2013, which was a 2-1 victory for Augustana.
