Vikings tally most wins since 2018

7/17/2023 11:15:00 AM

The 2023 Augustana Vikings softball season was filled with both individual and team accomplishments. With 22 wins on the year, Augie tallied their most in a season since 2018 and finished in a tie for third in the CCIW, their highest standing since 2014. Picked to finish 7th overall, the Vikings were one of just three teams remaining in the CCIW Tournament, ending one game away from a championship appearance.

Under first-year head coach Karl Gollan, Augustana began the new era with a neutral-site split with Culver-Stockton in mid-February. Both teams earned a six-inning win, with the Vikings taking the opener 8-0 before falling 10-0 in game two. A few days later, Augustana headed to Peoria, Ill. for the annual Mount Mary Slugger Series. The Vikings dropped game one to Dominican, but answered with three wins in a row, two over the host Mount Mary and one over Finlandia. During the three-game win streak, Augie outscored their opponents 42-1. Augustana picked up one more win the following week in their return trip to Peoria, defeating Knox 8-0.

Rounding out non-conference action and begin their CCIW slate, the Vikings experience five consecutive series splits coming out of the Mount Mary Slugger Series. Augie went 1-1 against St. Ambrose, Hanover, and Greenville before exchanging wins with North Central and Carthage to begin conference action. The Vikings knocked off the Firebirds in their first home game of the season on April 7, winning by a score of 6-1.

After a series loss at Millikin and non-conference split with Dubuque, the Vikings earned their first sweep of the year, winning a pair of road contests at Elmhurst. In game one, Nadia Ranieri went the distance and then some, striking out 15 Bluejays as the Vikings won in eight innings. Augie came back from a 3-1 deficit in game two, scoring three runs in the sixth. Jennica Soliz's single brought in two to seal the victory.

The Vikings proceeded to split their final two non-conference doubleheaders of the season, going 2-2 against UW-Platteville and Monmouth. Augie earned their second consecutive sweep in conference play on April 23, winning a pair of games over Carroll, both by run rule. Between the two games, Augie saw five home runs during the day, scoring 20 runs total on their way to their fourth straight conference win. The Vikings made it five wins in a row in league play, defeating North Park 3-0 the following Friday. Augustana closed out the regular season with a sweep of Wheaton on Senior Day to earn a trip to the CCIW Tournament.

Following the conclusion of the regular season, Ranieri was named the conference's Pitcher of the Year, the first Augie student-athlete to win a player of the year award since 2010. Morgan Bielfeldt and Claudia Buchholz were also named Second Team All-CCIW.

Augustana earned the No. 4 seed in the postseason tournament and took on the No. 5 seeded Carthage Firebirds in a win-or-go-home game to open postseason play. After a scoreless opening inning, Augie earned their first run of the game in the bottom of the second, using a two-out RBI single from Meghan Nixon to plate the first run. The Vikings' clutch hitting with two outs continued in the next inning as Buchholz brought in Bielfeldt all the way from first base, sending a double to the right-center fence to make it 2-0. The score remained intact all the way through the end, with the Firebirds mustering just four hits across seven innings. Ranieri earned the win, ending the game with 10 strikeouts and zero walks.

With the win, Augie entered the double elimination portion of the tournament as one of four teams remaining. The Vikings fell to top-seeded Illinois Wesleyan in their next outing, but advanced with a 5-3 victory over North Park in an elimination contest. Augie saw their season come to an end with a trip to the title game on the line, losing to the Titans in extra innings by a score of 4-3.

Following her historic season, Ranieri ended the 2023 year tied for the program record in strikeouts, finishing with 183. She currently sits No. 1 all-time in strikeouts per seven innings entering her senior campaign. During the season, she was a five-time CCIW Student-Athlete of the Week in 2023, earning four as a pitcher and one as a hitter. Buchholz enters the career ranks in batting average, on-base percentage, and slugging percentage, holding top 20 placements in all three categories. Bielfeldt also sits No. 12 all-time in slugging percentage. First-year pitcher Lauren Koster's 1.08 walks per game places her No. 10 all-time for a single season.

Bielfeldt, Buchholz, Ranieri, Ashlyn Mathers, and Olivia Blood were all named to the College Sports Communicators Academic All-District list in May.
