BLOOMINGTON, Ill. -- The Augustana Vikings softball team wrapped up their regular season on Saturday, falling to the Illinois Wesleyan Titans by scores of 5-3 and 8-0.
The Vikings struck first in the opener, plating two in the top of the first thanks to a
Morgan Bielfeldt two-run home run. The Vikings earned another to add to their total in the following inning, bringing in their third score of the game on a
Jennica Soliz single to left field.Â
Both pitching staffs and defenses settled in for the next few innings as the 3-0 score stood still. The Titans scratched across their first two tallies in the bottom of the fifth to cut the Augie advantage to just one, following it up with a game-tying home run in the bottom of the sixth. After a three-up, three-down seventh from the Vikings, Illinois Wesleyan closed out the game with a walk-off two-run homer to steal the 5-3 win.Â
Soliz led the Vikings' offensive effort with two hits and an RBI, while
Nadia Ranieri struck out six in 4.1 innings pitched.
In game two, the Titans pushed across the contest's first runs in the top of the second, plating two for the early 2-0 lead. The home team broke it open in the ensuing inning, sending six across home plate to push the score to 8-0. The eight-run differential remained intact through the end of the game as the Titans won via run rule in the fifth.Â
Bielfeldt finished game two 2-2 from the plate.
With the losses, Augustana finishes the regular season 20-18 overall and 9-7 in the CCIW. The Vikings will face either Elmhurst or Carthage in the opening round of the conference tournament on Thursday, May 11 at 12 p.m. from Bloomington, Ill.
