MOLINE, Ill. – The No. 20 ranked Augustana Vikings baseball team bested Monmouth in their final regular season home game on Tuesday, defeating the Fighting Scots 8-7.
The Vikings' offense hummed early, plating three runs in the first inning and one in the second behind five hits. In the opening inning, Kyle Campbell and Dymitri Kanellakis loaded the bases with a single and a hit-by-pitch before Chase Maifield drew a walk to secure the initial run. The ensuing at-bat, Alec McGinnis hammered a two-RBI single to right center to make it 3-0, with Campbell's RBI single in the second stretching the Vikings' advantage to four. The Fighting Scots stormed back in the third, scoring five runs to establish their first lead of the contest.
Following a single and a hit batter, Kanellakis mashed a single through the right side to even the score at 5-5 after four innings of action. A quiet fifth frame led into a busy sixth, beginning with two scores from Monmouth to put the road team ahead 7-5. Augie seized back the lead for good in the bottom of the frame as Maifield belted an RBI single to plate the first run before McGinnis singled to tie the game at seven-all. Michael Aragon brought in Maifield for the go-ahead score during the following at-bat to move the game to its eventual 8-7 final. Anthony Sus silenced the Fighting Scots for the remainder of the contest, tossing 3.2 innings and allowing just two hits for his third win of the season.
McGinnis batted in a team-high three runs to lead the 10-hit effort from the Vikings. Four different Vikings posted multi-hit performances.
Augustana improves to 31-6 with the win, finishing the regular season 14-1 at home and extending their win streak to 13. The Vikings will return to conference play against Wheaton on Friday, May 5. Start time against the Thunder is set for 3:00 p.m. from Lee Pfund Stadium.
