Vikings down North Central to advance to CCIW Tournament championship

MOLINE, Ill. –  The No. 1 seeded Augustana baseball team defeated the No. 2 seeded North Central Cardinals by a 7-4 final on Friday to advance to the CCIW Championship for the second straight season.

After a scoreless first inning from both teams, North Central established the game's first lead with an RBI single in the top of the second. The Vikings quickly answered with three runs in the bottom side of the frame, beginning with an RBI groundout from Michael Aragon to level the score at one-all. With two runners on, Cole Green mashed an RBI single up the middle before Alex Simon hit a run-scoring single the ensuing at-bat to put the Vikings ahead 3-1. The Cardinals reared back with one score in the third and two in the fifth to retake the lead at 4-3.

Augustana did not trail for long, loading the bases with just one out before Chase Maifield plated the tying run on a North Central wild pitch. Zachary Vrbancic grounded out the subsequent at-bat to bring in Alec McGinnis from third and reclaim the lead for the Vikings. Following two scoreless innings between the conference foes, the Vikings secured insurance with a pair of eighth-inning runs. Simon placed his mark on both scores, starting with an RBI single down the left field line before taking home on a Cardinals error to build a 7-4 cushion entering the ninth. With two runners on in the top of the inning and nobody out, Addison Southwick entered the game, striking out one before getting out of a bases-loaded jam with back-to-back outs to earn the save.

Anthony Sus earned the win after entering the game in the fifth, pitching 3.1 innings with three strikeouts and allowing zero runs. Simon, Maifield, and McGinnis each had three hits to lead the Vikings' 12-hit effort.

With the win, Augie moves to 37-6 on the season and secures their 19th consecutive victory. Augustana will draw either a rematch with North Central or face No. 5 seeded Illinois Wesleyan for the first time in the tournament in Saturday's championship contest. The first pitch is set for 11:00 a.m. from Swanson Stadium/Brunner Field.
