BLOOMINGTON, Ill. -- After winning their opening game of the CCIW Tournament on Thursday, the Augustana Vikings dropped game two of the day to the top-seeded Illinois Wesleyan Titans, falling by a score of 6-2.
The Vikings struck first in the contest, bringing in a leadoff single from
Ashlyn Mathers in the top of the second on an RBI hit from
Meghan Nixon. The Titans responded in their half of the inning, connecting on a two-out, two-run base hit to claim the 2-1 advantage after two innings of action.
Both teams went scoreless in the third and Illinois Wesleyan added onto their slim margin in the fourth, making it 3-1 heading into the fifth. The Vikings saw the first of two major threats in their ensuring at-bat, putting runners on second and third with nobody out. After being unable to cash in any runs in the fifth and seeing the Titans add three to their lead in the bottom half, Augie mirrored their start to the sixth, again putting two runners in scoring position with no outs recorded. This time, the Vikings managed to get one, plating Nixon on an RBI groundout from
Jennica Soliz. Augustana went down in order in the seventh as the home team closed the game out at its 6-2 final.
Augie notched seven hits in the game, led by a 2-2 effort from Nixon.
Lauren Koster went the distance on the mound, striking out one.
With the loss, the Vikings drop to 21-19 on the season. The team will now face elimination the rest of the way and will face either Millikin or North Park tomorrow afternoon at 1 p.m.
