MOLINE, Ill. – The Augustana Vikings baseball team will remain home to face the Monmouth Fighting Scots on Tuesday for their final non-conference battle.
The Vikings are 30-6 overall, 13-2 in conference, and are currently on a 12-game winning streak. They recently claimed the regular-season series against Illinois Wesleyan, winning both games in Saturday's doubleheader by scores of 10-2 and 12-2. With the wins, Augustana clinched at least a share of the CCIW regular season title.
In game one, Augie seized a 1-0 edge in the second inning before tacking on an additional six runs in the fifth to seize a 7-0 advantage. After the Vikings added two more runs in the bottom of the seventh inning to increase their lead to nine, the Titans plated their first run in the top of the eighth to move the score to 9-1. Chase Maifield erased the score with a solo home run in the bottom of the inning prior to Illinois Wesleyan plating one final run in the ninth to settle the opening game 10-2. Augustana established another early lead in game two, building a 3-0 cushion before the two teams traded runs in the third to push the score to 4-1. The Vikings broke the game open in the fourth, scoring five runs to take an eight-run lead, followed by another score in the sixth to go up 10-1. Illinois Wesleyan plated a run in the seventh, but it was all for naught as Cole Green walked off the Titans in the bottom of the eighth with a two-run single to win the game by run rule.
Harrison Boushele started game one and earned his seventh win, pitching 8.1 innings and allowing only two runs while striking out three batters. The Vikings recorded 15 hits, with Maifield going 4-for-5. In game two, Josh Wintroub took the mound and secured the win after striking out six batters in 6.2 innings of work. Augie outhits the Titans 16-8, with Dymitri Kanellakis, Kyle Campbell, and Green having three hits each.
Monmouth possesses a 16-20 overall record, 11-13 in the Midwest Conference, most recently securing a series win over Illinois College from April 29-30. After dropping game one, the Fighting Scots returned to claim the series with 9-7 and 5-4 victories. In their final game against the Blueboys, Monmouth faced a 4-0 deficit entering the bottom of the third. The Fighting Scots added runs in the third and fourth to cut the deficit to two, knotting the game at four-all after adding two more scores in the sixth inning. The following two frames were scoreless for both teams, but Monmouth refused to go into extra innings, walking off against the Blueboys in the ninth with Nate Melvin scoring from third on a wild pitch to put the game at its 5-4 final.
Augustana leads the Fighting Scots in the all-time series 52-34, with the Vikings claiming a 6-1 victory on back March 15. Maifield's RBI double snapped a three-inning scoring drought, while Michael Aragon followed with a run-scoring double of his own to put Augie up 2-0. The Vikings scored in the fifth before adding three more runs in the sixth to increase their lead to six. The Fighting Scots tallied their lone run in the eighth but could not complete the comeback as the Vikings captured their first home win. Bryce Luckey earned the win, tossing 5.1 innings and striking out six batters for a season-high. Augustana recorded seven hits, led by Kanellakis with two.
The non-conference battle kicks off at 7:00 p.m. from Swanson Stadium. The stream link can be found
