DECATUR, Ill. -- The Augustana Vikings dropped a pair of conference road games on Saturday, falling to the Millikin Big Blue by final scores of 9-0 and 6-3.
In the opener, the Big Blue earned their first run of the game in the first, quickly doubling their lead with one more in the second. Millikin broke things open with six runs in the bottom half of the third before capping off their scoring with another in the fourth. Augie went without a hit in the five-inning game, seeing just one base runner.
In game two, Millikin struck first in the top half of the second, but was met by a run from Augustana in the following at-bat thanks to a
Claudia Buchholz RBI single through the right side. The Big Blue quickly regained their lead, pushing across two in the top of the third to make it 3-1.Â
Buchholz got the Vikings within one with another RBI in the bottom of the fourth.
Nadia Ranieri gave the Vikings their first lead of the game three batters later, connecting on a two-run single with two outs to bring the score to 4-3 in their favor. The one-run advantage remained intact until the seventh inning, when Millikin tied the game at 4-4 on an RBI double. With two outs and a runner on second, the Big Blue connected on back-to-back run-producing hits to put them back out in front, eventually shutting the door on Augustana's final opportunity in the bottom half.
Augustana notched seven hits in game two, led by two from both
Lauren Koster and
Jennica Soliz. Koster went the distance on the mound, striking out two.
With the loss, Augie drops to 10-12 overall and 2-4 in the CCIW. The team will return home for a non-conference doubleheader on Thursday, April 13 when they host the Dubuque Spartans. Start time for game one is scheduled for 4 p.m.
