KENOSHA, Wis. – The Augustana Vikings men's volleyball team fell in consecutive sets to the No. 9 ranked Carthage Firebirds on Saturday, dropping by set scores of 25-19, 25-15, 25-15.
In the opening set, the Firebirds jumped out to a 7-3 lead before Augie stormed back with three-straight points to close the gap to one. The teams swapped points, resulting in four ties, with Carthage eventually pulling away from the closely-fought battle with a 7-1 scoring surge. The Firebirds held on for the six-point win despite a late 3-0 push from Augie.
Augie claimed an 8-7 lead early in the second game, but the Firebirds rallied with an 11-3 scoring run to go ahead 18-11. The Vikings brought the score within four at 19-15, but could not mount the comeback as Carthage scored six straight to secure the set win and go up 2-0 in the match. The Firebirds doubled up Augie 13-6 in the third game before the Vikings nabbed three consecutive scores to trim the edge to four. Carthage canceled out the run with a 3-0 burst of their own, extending their lead to eight at 21-13 and securing the series win with a late 4-2 run.
Aidan Bolen led the Augustana attack with 10 kills, while Zach Moreano finished behind with eight. Matthew Degnan paced the Vikings in assists with 23.
With the loss, the Vikings end their season with a 12-12 overall record, tying their most in a season in program history.
