Men's volleyball sweeps Rockford to wrap up non-conference schedule

ROCK ISLAND – The Augustana Vikings men's volleyball team defeated Rockford in their final non-conference bout on Monday, downing the Regents in consecutive sets by scores of 25-20, 25-14, 25-16.

Augie built an 11-7 lead early in the opening set, seeing two kills apiece from Tom Lamb, Aidan Bolen, and Zach Moreano in that span. An 8-5 run from the Regents trimmed the deficit to one prior to a 5-2 surge in response from the Vikings, pushing the advantage back out to four. The two teams traded scoring plays before Augie claimed three of the final four points to secure the opening game 25-20.

Augustana doubled up the Regents early in the second game by a 10-5 score, but Rockford answered with a small scoring burst to cut the differential to three. Augie scored eight-straight points from that point to go ahead by 11, eventually claiming the set win by that margin at 25-14. The third game began with a back-and-forth battle before the Vikings charged ahead with four unanswered points to take a 9-5 edge. The two teams proceeded to exchange three points, followed by four in a row from Augustana to double up Rockford 16-8 at the time. The Regents sliced one score off the Augie edge with a quick 3-2 run, but the Vikings answered with a 6-2 burst to put the game at match point. Rockford nabbed three desperation points, but an attack error gave Augustana the sweep.

The Vikings recorded 41 kills and hit at a .329 clip, led by Bolen with 11 spikes and Moreano with 10. Max Sellers secured a match-high 14 digs, double the amount of any other player on the floor. Matthew Degnan paced Augie in assists with 33.

With the win, Augustana moves to 11-11 overall. The team will face conference foe North Park for their final home match of the season on Wednesday, April 5 at 7:00 p.m.
