Box Score ST. PAUL, Minn. -- The No. 6 ranked and top-seeded Augustana women's water polo team is moving on to Collegiate Water Polo Association semifinals following an 18-6 victory over the No. 8 seed Carthage Firebirds on Friday.
Charlotte Newport notched the game's first goal just 34 second into the contest, later scoring another with just one second remaining in the opening period to take a 2-0 lead into the second. The lead quickly doubled to 4-0 following tallies from
Ocean Akau and
Lauren Dickinson before Carthage earned their first score of the game.
Victoria Guest swiftly answered with a power play goal, while
Casey Barragan canceled out a late Firebirds point with one of her own prior to halftime.Â
Augustana erupted for seven goals in the third period, including the first four all from different players. Barragan jump-started the surge, followed by scores from Newport,
Jillian Hagmann, and
Carli Udovich. Carthage broke up the seven-goal frame with their lone point of the quarter before Augie added to their lead with back-to-back scores from Dickinson and one from
Abbey Ellis. The Vikings led 13-3 entering the final eight minutes of action.
The Vikings out-scored the Firebirds 5-3 in the fourth quarter, fueled by goals from five different players. Guest and Barragan notched the first two scores, with Ellis and Udovich contributing to the team's total later on.
Sophie Arceneaux secured the final goal of the game on a power play tally with under a minute remaining.
Newport, Barragan, and Dickinson all tallied hat tricks in the game, while
Annie Opal Dickson led the team in assists with four.
Lizzie Pelzman earned the win in net, stopping 10 shots and grabbing two steals and three assists.
With the win, the Vikings improve to 14-5 overall on the season. The team will face No. 10 ranked and No. 5 seeded Macalester on Saturday, April 22 with a trip to the championship on the line. Start time is scheduled for 12:40 p.m.
