WAVERLY, Iowa -- The Augustana Vikings men's tennis team picked up their fourth win in a row on Sunday, defeating the Wartburg Knights on the road by a score of 6-3.
The Vikings claimed the early lead in the match with two wins in doubles play, earning victories at the No. 2 and 3 positions. At No. 2,
Gustavo Fontenelle and
Timothee Philip took down their opponent by a score of 8-3, while
Gabriel Luna and
Nicolas Navarro secured an 8-5 victory at No. 3. Augustana led 2-1 heading into singles action.
Four of the six singles contests belonged to Augustana, highlighted by wins in the the No. 4, 5, and 6 spots from Philip, Navarro, and Fontenelle. All three tallied one set win by a 6-1 final.
Quentin Essayie was the other winner for the Vikings, defeating his counterpart at No. 2 by a close-fought score of 6-4, 7-6.
Deepak Vayara battled back from a first set loss at No. 1, but eventually fell in the tiebreaker.
With the win, Augie improves to 6-3 overall on the season. The team will compete in their first home match of the season on Thursday, April 6 when they host the Central Dutch. Start time is scheduled for 4 p.m. from the Lower Campus Courts.
