ROCK ISLAND -- The Augustana Vikings men's tennis team earned their fifth straight victory on Thursday, defeating the visiting Central Dutch by a score of 8-1.
Augustana took an early 3-0 lead after sweeping doubles play. The Vikings were led at the top spot by
Gabriel Luna and
Arthur Hermange, defeating their opponent by a score of 8-3. The duos of
Quentin Essayie/
Deepak Vayara and
Timothee Philip/
Gustavo Fontenelle fought through closer battles at No. 2 and 3, winning by respective scores of 8-6 and 8-5.
The Vikings claimed the match win with five of six wins in singles, with all five of their victories coming in consecutive sets. In spots one through four, the Vikings boasted at least one set by a score of 6-0, led by Hermange at No. 1 with a 6-3, 6-0 victory. Essayie and Luna both also earned 6-0 wins, but each earned hard-fought victories in their other set by a score of 7-5. Philip took care of business at No. 4 by a final of 6-4, 6-0, while
Nicolas Navarro notched a 6-3, 6-2 win at No. 5. The lone victory for Central came at No. 6 in three sets.
With the victory, the Vikings improve to 7-3 on the season and have now won five straight matches, their longest winning streak since April of 2021. Augie will remain home for their next match on Wednesday, April 12 when they host the St. Ambrose Fighting Bees. Start time is scheduled for 3:30 p.m. from the Lower Campus Courts
