ROCK ISLAND -- The Augustana Vikings men's tennis team coasted to a victory over the visiting Elmhurst Bluejays on Wednesday, winning by a score of 9-0 in their final home match of the season.
Augustana swiftly took a 3-0 lead following doubles play, earning a quick 8-0 win at the No. 2 position from
Timothee Philip and
Gustavo Fontenelle before
Nicolas Navarro and
Quentin Essayie grabbed an 8-3 triumph at No. 1.
Gabriel Luna and
Arthur Mendes were credited the win at No. 3 via forfeit.
In singles, the Vikings were awarded another win at No. 6 due to Elmhurst forfeit, followed up by victories in all five matches played. At the No. 3 and 4 spots, Luna and Navarro collected perfect 6-0, 6-0 wins, while
Arthur Hermange and Mendes at No. 1 and 5 each grabbed a 6-0 first-set victory before winning handily in the second. Essayie rounded out the sweep, taking down his opponent 6-1, 6-2 at No. 2.
With the result, Augustana improves to 10-5 overall and 3-2 in the CCIW. The team will be back in action on Saturday, April 22 when they visit Carthage for a conference battle. Start time is scheduled for 12 p.m. from Kenosha, Wis.Â
