KENOSHA, Wis. – The Augustana baseball team hung on to complete a three-game sweep of the Carthage Firebirds on Saturday, winning on the road by a score of 8-7.
The Vikings were on their back foot early as the Firebirds jumped to a 3-0 lead behind a two-run home run and a sacrifice fly in the opening inning. The second inning was swift for both teams, giving way to a three-run surge from Augie in the third to tie the game at three runs apiece. The scoring began with two outs, seeing a Kyle Campbell RBI single to right field before Chase Maifield batted in two runs with his single to center field. The Firebirds added a run in the bottom of the frame to break the deadlock and go up one.
The Vikings' offense secured three more runs in the top of the fourth, leading off with a pair of singles from Michael Aragon and Alex Simon. Matt Ozanic belted an RBI single to score Aragon before Simon scored on a wild pitch to give Augie the lead. The final run of the frame was plated off the bat of Kyle Campbell with his RBI single through the middle of the infield to extend the Vikings' lead to two at 6-4.
Augie held their two-run advantage through three scoreless innings leading up to an equalizing two-score seventh from the home team. Neither team scored a run in the eighth inning, but a two-run surge from the Vikings in the top of the ninth put the game in sudden death territory for Carthage. Augie's first run of the inning came on a Firebirds' error, plating Simon before Alec McGinnis hit a sacrifice fly to left field to bring in Ozanic from third. Trailing by two in their final at-bat opportunity, Carthage strung together back-to-back doubles to cut the margin to one run, but three straight strikeouts from Addison Southwick earned the Vikings the road win.
The Vikings totaled 13 hits to the Firebirds' 11, with Simon leading the way with three. Three others posted multi-hit efforts, including Campbell, who paced the team in RBI with three. Jacob Reusch entered the game in relief in the first inning and ate up 6.1 innings, striking out six.
Augustana improves to 22-6 overall and 7-2 in the CCIW. The Vikings will return to Moline for a nine-game home slate at Swanson Stadium, beginning with a conference battle against the Elmhurst Bluejays on Tuesday, April 18. Start time is scheduled for 7:00 p.m
