TOPEKA, Kan. – The Augustana baseball team defeated the UW-Platteville Pioneers by a 13-3 score on Sunday in the final game of their Kansas road trip.
Harrison Boushele got the start for Augie, striking out two batters and picking off a Platteville runner to go three-up, three-down. The Vikings offense got off to a fast start, with Cole Green scoring on an Alex Simon RBI single for the game's first run. Kyle Campbell and Matt Ozanic each added RBI groundouts to conclude the three-run opening inning. Augustana added runs in the second and third innings on run-scoring singles from Green and Chase Maifield to increase their lead to 5-0.
The Pioneers earned their first run at the top of the fourth before Augie added two more scores in the bottom of the inning. Two Vikings reached base before a Simon single drove in Green for his second run of the game. Ozanic followed with an RBI single to bring in McGinnis from third, increasing Augie's lead to six. Platteville hit a two-run home run in the top of the fifth to trim the deficit to four. Augustana's offense erupted for six in the bottom of the frame despite tallying just two hits. Dymitri Kanellakis' two-run single capped off the scoring for the Vikings as they went up by 10. Boushele finished his day with a swift sixth inning, striking out two batters before Brian Fischer pitched a clean seventh to close out the game.
Boushele tossed six innings and struck out 13 batters. On offense, Augie finished the game with nine hits, led by Simon's two-hit effort. Seven players drove in runs, with Simon also the team leader with three.
Augustana improves to 6-2 and finishes their stay in Topeka winning all three games. The Vikings will face Pitt-Bradford next on March 9 as they kick off a four-day stay at the Gene Cusic Classic in Fort Myers, Fla.
