LOS ANGELES, Calif. -- The Augustana Vikings women's water polo team wrapped up their stay at the Claremont Convergence on Saturday, falling to the No. 7 ranked California Lutheran Regals before knocking off the No. 10 ranked Occidental Tigers.
Game One (L 13-4 vs. Cal Lutheran)
In the first game of the day, the Vikings found themselves in an early hole after getting blanked in the opening quarter by a score of 3-0. The Regals pushed their margin to four early in the second before the Vikings found the back of the net for the first time on
Ocean Akau's goal. Cal Lutheran responded with three more goals before the end of the period, taking a 7-1 lead into halftime.
After a score from the Regals to begin the third,
Charlotte Newport notched a goal for the Vikings to jump-start the team's best offensive quarter of the game. The two teams traded scores three times in the frame, with
Casey Barragan and
Lauren Dickinson tallying the other two for Augustana. The Regals led 10-4 heading into the fourth, eventually adding three more to their total for the 13-4 win.
Game Two (W 14-11 vs. Occidental)
It was a busy opening quarter for both teams in the Vikings' final contest of the day. Augustana grabbed the first two scores of the game, one apiece from
Annie Opal Dickson and Newport. The Tiger cut the deficit to one with a score shortly after, but was canceled out after Akau's goal made it 3-1. The two teams traded points to close the frame, with the Vikings on top 4-2 after eight minutes of action.
Dickinson's goal to begin the second period was the second of two straight to bring the score to 5-2. The two teams saw another high-scoring eight minutes, combining for 11 goals in just the second quarter alone.
Victoria Guest's two goals helped fend off a scoring run from the Tigers, while Newport and Barragan's tallies late in the second helped maintain a one-goal led for Augie at the halftime break.
The Vikings posted a plus-one differential in the third quarter, led by Dickinson's two scores. Akau broke a 10-10 tie with 3:26 remaining in the frame to kick off four straight goals from Augie. Barragan grabbed the final two points for Augustana in the fourth quarter to make it 14-10 as one last score from Occidental with seconds remaining brought it to the 14-11 final score.
Dickinson led the offensive effort tied for a game-high four goals, while three different Vikings accounted for two steals.
Lizzie Pelzman stopped 12 shots in net to earn the win.
Augustana now sits at 6-3 on the season and will host McKendree on Saturday, March 11 for their home opener. Start time is scheduled for 1 p.m.
