3/4/2023 9:00:00 AM

ROCK ISLAND – The Augustana Vikings women's lacrosse team begins a five-game home stand on Sunday, March 5  when they battle the Augsburg Auggies.

Augie opened their season on the road Wednesday against Illinois Tech, downing the Scarlet Hawks by a 14-10 score. The Vikings grabbed a 6-0 lead early in the second quarter, but Illinois Tech responded with a five-point unanswered run, cutting the lead to one at the half. The Scarlet Hawks struck first out of the break to even the score at six apiece. Augie swiftly replied, scoring four goals to build a three-point edge into the final frame. The Vikings opened the fourth period with four straight points, extending their lead to six, enough to hold off two late Scarlet Hawk scores and win in their first action of the season.

Cassidy Petrie led the Vikings in scoring with four goals, followed by Claire Kim and Madison Langewisch with three each. In goal, Rachel Forman recorded 16 saves on 32 shot attempts. Elena Bechard and Kyla Painter both had three caused turnovers for Augie.

Augsburg enters Sunday's match with a 1-1 record, splitting their two-game home stand to open the season. The Auggies began with a contest against Carroll on February 19, losing 21-3 to the Pioneers. Augsburg responded with an 18-7 victory over UW-Stout, outshooting the Blue Devils 38-16 and forcing 22 turnovers. The Auggies had four players earn hat tricks in the game, with five other players scoring at least one goal.

Augustana leads Augsburg in the all-time series 3-0, with the most recent meeting between the two programs resulting in an 18-10 road win for the Vikings on March 22, 2022. Last year's game saw eight Augie players score goals, with Petrie tallying five.

Start time is scheduled for 12:00 p.m. from Thorson-Lucken Field. Stream link for the non-conference matchup can be found here
