ROCK ISLAND -- The Augustana Vikings men's lacrosse team will be back at home on Sunday, March 5 when they host the Whitter Poets in a non-conference tilt.
The Vikings improved to 2-1 on Wednesday following a 16-3 road win over the Cornell Rams. Augie got on the board early and often, posting five first-quarter goals on their way to six-goal advantage at the break. The team grew their margin to as many as nine in the third quarter before a 6-2 fourth period moved the final score to 16-3. The Vikings saw a successful defensive outing all around, led byÂ
Paul Huber, who caused five Cornell turnovers.Â
Gus Magnusson earned the win in net, stopping 13 shots, whileÂ
Trevor Herman won 85.7 percent of his faceoffs to help set the tone.
Carson Ghys was the team leader in goals with five, also finishing with a team-best seven ground balls.
Brady Holtz was close behind with four goals.
The Poets out of California enter the weekend with an 0-3 overall record, allowing 20-plus goals in their last two outings. The team recently completed an east-coast trip, falling to St. Mary's (Md.) by a score of 24-10 in their most recent outing. Whittier will begin a span of three games against CCIW schools in four days, beginning with Illinois Wesleyan on Saturday in Bloomington, Ill. The team will face Augie on Sunday before taking on North Central on Tuesday. The Vikings and Poets have met just once all-time, resulting in a 16-8 win in Rock Island back in 2018.
Start time is scheduled for 3 p.m.
