NAPERVILLE, Ill. – The Augustana Vikings men's volleyball team fell in consecutive sets to the North Central Cardinals on Sunday by a score of 25-12, 25-16, 25-16.
Augie hung around early in the first set, keeping the deficit within two points early through a 7-5 score.North Central later pulled away with an 11-2 surge to grab a double-figure lead at 21-9 and eventually win the opening set by double digits.
In the second game, Augie leveled the score at 3-3 before the Cardinals gained control with a 4-1 surge. After the Vikings pulled within one, North Central doubled them up over the span of the next nine points to cushion their advantage out to four.The Cardinals produced a 10-2 outburst midway through the set, putting the home team ahead by 11. Augie mounted a comeback attempt behind a 4-1 spark but was snuffed out as North Central claimed match point to take a two-game series lead.
Augustana saw an early lead in the third, but was met with a quick North Central 7-2 spurt to flip a two-point deficit into a three-point advantage. The Vikings cut it to two following the run, but never got that close again as the Cardinals closed out the 3-0 win with their second 25-16 victory of the match.
Aidan Bolen led the Augustana attack with eight kills, hitting at a .250 clip. Max Sellers was the team leader in digs with 12, while Matthew Degnan paced the Vikings in assists with 17.
With the loss, Augustana moves to 10-10 overall and 1-6 in conference. The team will return home on Saturday, April 1 for a conference battle against the Illinois Wesleyan Titans.
