BLOOMINGTON, Ill. -- The Augustana Vikings men's tennis picked up their third straight victory on Friday, defeating the Illinois Wesleyan Titans to begin the CCIW schedule by a final of 9-0.
Augie swept all three doubles matches for the early 3-0 lead, led by
Arthur Hermange and
Gabriel Luna at No. 1, winning their match by a score of 8-3.
Gustavo Fontenelle and
Timothee Philip also made quick work of their opponent at the No. 3 position, taking it by a score of 8-2, while
Deepak Vayara and
Quentin Essayie battled through a closer contest at No. 2 with a final of 8-5.
All six singles matches went favor of the Vikings to secure them their third 9-0 win in a row. Luna at No. 3 and
Nicolas Navarro at No. 5 each posted 6-0 set wins on their way to wins in consecutive sets, while Vayara at No. 1, Essayie at No. 2, and Mendes at No. 6 also won their matches in two sets. Philip defeated his opponent 6-0 in set one before dropping the second to send it to a tiebreaker. Philip completed the match sweep with a close 10-8 victory.
"We played well today and stepped up at big times of some matches," said head coach
David DeSimone. "It is great to get off to a good start to the conference schedule.
With the win, Augustana improves to 5-3 overall and 1-0 in the CCIW. The Vikings will step back out of conference for their next match on Sunday, April 2 when they take on the Wartburg Knights on the road. Start time is scheduled for 12 p.m. from Waverly, Iowa.
