CLAREMONT, Calif. -- The No. 8 ranked Augustana Vikings women's water polo team will head to the west coast March 3-4 to compete in the Claremont Convergence as they get set to square off with four top 10 opponents during their stay.
Augustana currently sits at 4-1 overall and No. 8 in the DIII national poll. The Vikings also have taken over the top spot in the CWPA rankings, overcoming Austin in the latest edition of the rankings. Augie is currently riding a four-game win streak after going 4-0 at the Macalester Invite two weekends ago, picking up wins over VMI, Ottawa (Ariz.), Caltech, and Carthage.
Casey Barragan was named the CWPA Player and Rookie of the Week following the invitational, while
Lizzie Pelzman earned Defensive Player of the Week for the second straight time.
On Friday, the Vikings will take on the No. 4 ranked Chapman Panthers, who enter with a 1-8 overall record. The Panthers have not faced a DIII opponent this season, with their lone win coming in a thrilling 17-16 victory over NAIA school Westcliff. Chapman has gone up against a high number of DI opponents so far, with their most recent outing resulting in a 21-5 loss to Villanova in Princeton, N.J. The Panthers finished last season with a 12-16 mark, winning their lone matchup over the Vikings by a final of 15-10. Start time on Friday is scheduled for noon CST.
Augustana will close Friday's action with a true road game against the one of the host schools in the No. 2 ranked Claremont-Mudd-Scripps Athenas CMS currently sits 2-5 on the season after dropping their last contest by a score of 16-7 at Fresno State. Friday's meeting with Augustana will be the first against a DIII school this season for CMS and will also be the first-ever meeting between the two programs. Start time is scheduled for 3:45 p.m CST.
On Saturday, Augustana will meet the No. 7 ranked California Lutheran Regals in Los Angeles. Cal Lutheran currently sits at 1-7 on the season and recently snapped their five-game losing streak to begin the year with an 8-7 win over Ottawa (Ariz.). Since then, the Regals have dropped back-to-back games against California Baptist and Azusa Pacific. Saturday will be the first-ever meeting between Cal Lutheran and Augustana, with a start time scheduled for 12:20 p.m. CST.
The Vikings close the weekend with another true road game against the Occidental Tigers at 5:40 p.m. CST. The Tigers are 0-9 this season, with their most recent outing a 20-3 loss to Ottawa (Ariz.). The two teams met at last season's Claremont Convergence, resulting in an 11-7 win for Augustana, the first victory in program history.
Charlotte Newport had two goals and two assists to help lead the Vikings.
