ROCK ISLAND -- The Augustana Vikings women's water polo team kicked off the Collegiate Water Polo Association (CWPA) regional weekend on Friday, defeating the Wittenberg Tigers at home by a score of 13-3.
Augustana jumped out to a big first quarter, seeing six goals on their way to a five-goal advantage after eight minutes of action.
Casey Barragan accounted for five of the team's six scores, while
Ocean Akau added the other on a penalty shot. The two teams played to a low-scoring second quarter, with
Olivia Parry notching the lone goal of the period to make it a 7-1 lead for Augustana heading into halftime.Â
Another defensive battle ensued in the third quarter, with each team adding a goal to keep the six-point margin for Augie intact. Barragan notched her sixth goal of the game halfway through the third before the Tigers earned it back to bring the score to 8-2 with eight minutes to go.
The fourth quarter saw five goals for Augustana as they broke away for good from the Tigers. Four different players tallied a score in the final period, with
Charlotte Newport leading the way with two. Barragan,
Annie Opal Dickson, and
Victoria Guest were responsible for the other three as the Vikings posted a four-goal advantage to end the game up double digits.
Barragan led the offensive efforts with seven goals on 10 shots, while
Lizzie Pelzman anchored the defense with 14 saves in net, also adding three steals.
With the win, Augie improves to 7-4 on the season and 1-0 in the CWPA. The team will take on Carthage and No. 10 Macalester tomorrow at 12:15 and 6 p.m.
