ROCK ISLAND -- The Augustana Vikings women's water polo team will host four conference opponents beginning March 17-19 in the first of two Collegiate Water Polo Association (CWPA) events. A total of eight games will be held at the Anne Greve Lund Natatorium, with Augustana and the Wittenberg Tigers kicking things off on Friday at 6 p.m..
Augie enters the weekend with a 6-4 overall record after dropping a home contest to McKendree last Saturday by a final of 15-7. After falling behind by five at halftime, the Vikings cut it to three at one point in the second half, but a plus-two advantage in the fourth for the Bearcats fended off any threats of a comeback for the Vikings. Augustana out-shot McKendree 29-23 in the game, led by six apiece from
Lauren Dickinson and
Charlotte Newport. Dickinson also added a steal and an assist to go with her team-high two goals.
Augustana's first contest of the weekend will be against Wittenberg on Friday night. The Tigers currently possess a 4-3 overall record, but have lost three of their last four outings. Wittenberg was defeated by Gannon in their most recent contest, falling by a score of 17-12. The Vikings hold a 3-0 record against the Tigers, winning last season's meetings by a combined margin of 10 points. Augustana defeated Wittenberg 15-11 in the CWPA semifinals in 2022.
On Saturday, the Vikings will begin the day against the Carthage Firebirds, who come in with a 3-8 overall record. The Firebirds have dropped four straight games after posting a two-game winning streak earlier this season. In their most recent outing, the team was defeated by Austin by a score of 16-1. Augustana is 3-0 all-time against Carthage, including a 19-7 win over the Firebirds earlier this season in St. Paul, Minn.
Casey Barragan had five goals for Augie in the victory. Start time between the two teams on Saturday is scheduled for 12:15 p.m.
At 6 p.m., Augustana will face the No. 10 ranked Macalester Scots in the day's finale. Macalester currently sits 2-6 on the season, recently returning from a 1-3 trip to California. The Scots fell to La Verne in their last outing by a score of 9-6, picking up a 12-11 win over St. Francis prior to that. Macalester checked in at No. 10 in the latest Division III poll for the first time this season. Augustana won both meetings last year over the Scots.
In their final game of the weekend, the Vikings will face the No. 9 ranked Austin 'Roos on Sunday at 9 a.m. Austin comes in with a 1-8 overall record, recently picking up their first win of the season in a 16-1 defeat of Carthage. The 'Roos have played all Division I opponents prior to their meeting with the Firebirds. Austin won all four meetings against Augustana last season, including a victory in the CWPA title game and third-place game at the USA Water Polo national tournament.
