Augie walks off Western Connecticut State to conclude Gene Cusic Classic

FORT MYERS, Fla. – Augustana baseball earned a walk-off 7-4 victory over the Western Connecticut State Wolves to complete a four-game sweep of the Gene Cusic Classic.

Nathaniel Sammer got the nod for Augustana, striking out the first three batters he faced to put the Vikings on offense quickly. Augie worked through a scoreless first inning before nabbing the game's first two runs in the bottom of the second. Cole Green got the Vikings started with an RBI single, followed by an Alec McGinnis sacrifice fly to make the score 2-0. After a scoreless third frame thanks to double plays from both teams, Western Connecticut State tied the game with a run in both the fourth and fifth innings.

The Vikings secured a one-run edge in the seventh inning with Alex Simon hitting a sacrifice fly to bring in Carter Foat from third. Augie doubled their advantage in the eighth inning with a Brett Benedetti RBI single to bring the score to 4-2. The Wolves extended the game in the top of the ninth, using back-to-back run-scoring singles with two outs to even the score. After a pair of walks in the bottom half, Kyle Campbell ended the game in walk-off fashion with a three-run home run.

Jacob Reusch earned the win for Augie in the ninth inning, facing four batters in relief and keeping the game tied. The Vikings grabbed eight hits, led by Campbell's and Dymitri Kanellakis' multi-hit performances. Campbell was the game's RBI leader with three.

Augustana's win is now their ninth straight overall, moving to 10-2 on the season. The Vikings will begin a three-game homestand on March 17-19 as part of the Augustana Invitational against Monmouth, Buena Vista, and Dominican.
