BLOOMINGTON, Ill. – The Augustana Vikings men's volleyball team defeated the Illinois Wesleyan Titans on the road Saturday, winning 3-0 by set scores of 25-18, 25-21, 25-20.
Illinois Wesleyan pulled ahead to an early 5-3 lead before a 7-1 response from the Vikings gave them a 10-6 advantage. The Titans cut the lead to one at 12-11, but Augustana pulled away, eventually closing the set with six of the final eight points to win 25-18. In set two, the teams battled to a 16-16 deadlock before a 9-4 run from the Vikings capped off the game and gave them a 2-0 advantage in the match.
Trailing 6-4 early in third, Augustana rattled off nine of the next 11 points to flip the lead in their favor. Illinois Wesleyan cut the deficit to one point on four occasions, with the latest coming at 19-18, but Augie's 6-2 burst late in the set sealed the sweep.
The Vikings hit at a .382 clip on their attacks with Ben Schultz leading the team in kills with 14, followed by Zach Moreano and Sean Carlson with nine apiece. Aiden Bond was the team leader with seven digs, while Matthew Degnan paced Augie with 37 assists.
With the win, Augustana improves to 10-6 overall and 1-2 in conference. The team will return to the Roy J. Carver Center on Wednesday, March 15 for another conference battle against the No. 4 Carthage Firebirds.
