MOUNT VERNON, Iowa -- The Augustana Vikings men's lacrosse team won their second straight game on Wednesday, defeating the Cornell Rams in their first road contest by a score of 16-3.
The Vikings jumped out to a big opening first quarter, scoring five goals while keep the Rams without one. Four different Augie players secured a score in the opening 15 minutes, with
Matteo Uccelli leading the charge with the game's first just 39 seconds in.
Elijah Graesser and
Zach Reser also accounted goals in the first, with
Carson Ghys notching two to lead Augustana to the early advantage.
The scoring slowed down in the second quarter, but another score from Ghys made it six in a row to start the game. The Rams got their first point of the contest nearly halfway through the second quarter, but were met with one more score from Graesser before the end of the half. The Vikings led 7-1 at the break.
Augustana continued to add onto their lead in the third period, boasting another scoreless frame from their defense as they outscored Cornell 3-0 during that span.
Jack Olson found the back of the net to begin the second half, followed by two scores from
Brady Holtz to cap off the three-point third quarter. The Vikings saw their biggest offensive showing of the game in the fourth, putting up a six-spot thanks to two goals each from Ghys and Holtz.
Jake Moore and
Jack Connolly also added a score as Augie cruised to the 14-point win.Â
The Vikings saw a successful defensive outing all around, led by
Paul Huber, who caused five Cornell turnovers.
Gus Magnusson earned the win in net, stopping 13 shots, while
Trevor Herman won 85.7 percent of his faceoffs to help set the tone. Ghys was the team leader in goals with five, also finishing with a team-best seven ground balls. Holtz was close behind with four goals.
With the win, Augustana improves to 2-1 on the season. The team will return home for their next contest on Sunday, March 5 when they host the Whittier Poets at Thorson-Lucken Field. Start time is scheduled for 3 p.m.
