CLINTON, Iowa -- The Augustana Vikings women's tennis team picked up a close win over the Luther Norse on Saturday, winning by a score of 5-4 in a neutral-site contest.
The Vikings began the match in a deficit as the Norse grabbed two of the three doubles matches for the early 2-1 lead heading into singles.
Hannah Colbert and
Caitlyn Hanulikova were victorious in the No. 1 spot to salvage a point for Augie, winning by a score of 8-3.
Augustana earned four wins in singles to steal the match by a final of 5-4. The team was successful in tight moments, winning three of four three-set matches.
Michaela Magee at No. 3, Colbert at No. 4, and
Lauren Oda at No. 6 all won their first sets before dropping the second. Magee and Colbert were victorious in their tie-breaking sets to keep Augie alive in the match.
Natasha Gauerke battled back from a first-set loss, winning the second by a score of 6-3 before winning 10-7 in the super tiebreaker to earn the fifth and match-clinching point for Augustana. Hanulikova also capped off her undefeated day with a 6-3, 6-4 win at the No. 2 position.
With the win, the Vikings improve to 5-4 on the season. The team will be back in action on Saturday, February 26 at Kalamazoo.
