ROCK ISLAND – The Augustana Viking men's volleyball team earned their second consecutive win at home on Saturdy, defeating the visiting Wisconsin Luther Warriors in straight sets by scores of 25-14, 25-18, 25-15.
The inaugural matchup between the two programs began with a back-and-forth battle to a 4-4 score before Augustana earned nine straight points to take a 13-4 lead. The Warriors responded with a 6-4 scoring run of their own to move the set to 17-10. An Aidan Bolen spike at 21-13 snuffed out a three-point burst from Wisconsin Lutheran, giving service advantage to the Vikings as they closed out the opening frame 25-14.
Set two saw Augie quickly double up Wisconsin Lutheran with eight of the first 12 points scored. The Vikings cushioned their advantage to nine, but endured five straight scores from the Warriors to quickly trim the margin back down to four at 14-10. A kill from
Ben Schultz and back-to-back service aces from
Zach Moreano flipped momentum back in the Vikings' favor as they held on for the seven-point victory to take a 2-0 lead in the match.
Like the first, the two teams battled to a back-and-forth start to the third, trading points that resulted in an 8-8 tie. The Vikings broke the deadlock with a 9-2 scoring run to take a 17-10 lead heading into the final stretch. Augie never saw their differential dip below five as they coasted to the double-digit victory to earn the sweep.
The Vikings out-hit the Warriors 41-11 in the kills category, led by Bolen's 11 and Schultz's eight. Five different members of the team recorded at least four kills in the win, finishing with an attack percentage of .411 as a whole. Matthew Degnan added 33 assists.
Augustana moves to 7-3 with the win. The team will be back in action on Wednesday, February 22 when they face the St. Ambrose Fighting Bees in Davenport, Iowa. The two teams met just four days ago, resulting in a 3-1 victory for the Vikings. Start time is scheduled for 7 p.m.
