Women's water polo travels to Minnesota for Macalester Invite

ST. PAUL, Minn. -- The Augustana Vikings women's water polo team will compete in their first weekend invitational of the year on February 18-19 when they head to the Twin Cities for four games.

Augustana currently sit 0-1 following a 19-6 to NCAA DII McKendree last Saturday. Despite the loss, the Vikings saw success on an individual level, sweeping the CWPA weekly award. Ocean Akau was named the league's player of the week after notching two goals in the contest. Lizzie Pelzman made 11 saves in net to earn defensive player of the week, while Casey Barragan's four shots and three drawn exclusions notched her rookie of the week honors.

The Vikings' first matchup will be against the VMI Keydets, their first-ever meeting. VMI enters Saturday with a 0-1 record after falling to Salem by a score of 16-12. The team finished their 2022 campaign with a 4-26 record. Start time between VMI and Augustana is scheduled for 10:30 a.m.

Also on Saturday, Augie will match up with the Ottawa (Ariz.) Spirit. Ottawa enters with a 3-5 record, currently in the midst of a five-game losing streak after beginning the season with three straight wins. The Spirit were defeated by UC Santa Barbara in their most recent outing on January 22 by a score of 18-6. Ottawa defeated Augustana last year in their lone meeting by a final of 17-11  Start time on Saturday is scheduled for 3:30 p.m.

On Sunday, the Vikings will first face the Caltech Beavers at 10:15 a.m. Caltech has yet to play a game this season, with their first action of the season coming this weekend in St. Paul. The Beavers went 1-19 in 2022. Sunday will be the first-ever meeting between Augustana and Caltech.

The Vikings wrap up their stay against a familiar foe in Carthage at 4:30 p.m. The Firebirds also have not played a game yet this season, with their first contest scheduled to be against Caltech on Saturday. Augustana defeated Carthage both times they met last season, winning by a combined score of 35-12 over two games.
