ST. LOUIS, Mo. -- The Augustana Vikings men's volleyball team will travel to St. Louis on Saturday to face the St. Norbert Green Knights and Fontbonne Griffins for their third tri-match of the season.
The Vikings are currently on a four-match win streak, coming off a successful two-day trip to Wisconsin where they tallied wins over the Edgewood Eagles and Lakeland Muskies. Both wins came in 3-0 fashion, moving the Vikings to 4-2 on the season. In their matchup against Edgewood, Augie posted 14 kills out of 25 attempts in the opening frame, finishing with a match-high 44 percent hitting percentage on their way to a 25-18 win. The Vikings jumped to a 12-4 lead in the second set, coasting to a comfortable 25-13 victory. Augie swung above 40 percent on offense again in the third game, securing the set and series sweep. Aidan Bolen posted 17 kills on just 20 attempts, helping lead him to CCIW Student-Athlete of the Week honors.
Augie defeated Lakeland 3-0 in their second contest of the road trip. With victories by at least five points in each of the three frames, the Vikings handily took each set. Augie established the tone early in the first game, leaping to a 7-2 lead and winning the set 25-17. In the second frame, Lakeland led Augie 7-5 before the Vikings surged back with a seven-point run. The Muskies stayed in the game, but Augustana forged ahead and won the set 25-20. The Muskies led the Vikings 2-1 early in the third frame, but an Augie scoring run of 9-1 midway through the set helped them take control and clinch their second contest of the road trip.
The Green Knights enter the weekend with a 2-3 record. St. Norbert snapped a two-match losing streak, winning their most recent outing
against Olivet by a 3-0 score in their home opener. The Green Knights hit at a .250 clip in the contest. Saturday will be the first-ever meeting between the Augustana and St. Norbert's men's volleyball programs.
For their second match of the day, the Vikings will face Fontbonne. The Griffins enter the tri-match with a 4-5 record, most recently defeating Illinois Wesleyan 3-1 at home. Fontbonne secured their first two frames with back-to-back 25-19 set wins. The Titans stole the third set with a late three-point run, but the Griffins shut the door on the contest in the fourth set by a 25-20 score. The Griffins totaled a season-high 13 blocks, notably notching eight solo blocks at the net. In the all-time series, Augie leads Fontbonne by a 4-2 overall record. The most recent matchup between the two programs came on February 11, 2022, resulting in a 3-1 road defeat for the Vikings. Bolen led the Vikings with a team-high 12 kills in the loss.
