Women’s basketball drops physical battle to No. 16 Hope

HOLLAND, Mich. -- The Augustana Vikings women's basketball team dropped the first non-conference battle in Michigan on Tuesday to the No. 16 Hope Flying Dutch by a score of 83-64.

Augie and Hope exchanged baskets to begin the game, but the Flying Dutch pulled away with a three-point lead after 10 minutes of action. The Vikings secured a field goal percentage of 50, holding Hope to 47 percent. Hope held a slight advantage in threes with one extra make than Augustana to help account for the 24-21 lead after one quarter.

Augie's momentum on the offensive side slowed down in the second period, falling behind to Hope by a 23-15 margin. Macy Beinborn tallied eight points in the frame to help keep the team in striking distance, but Hope maintained its distance with another high-scoring period and took a 47-36 lead into the break.

The home team extended its lead to as many as 17 in the third quarter, but Augustana saw shots fall late in the frame to cut the deficit back down to 12. Augie had more converted opportunities from the free throw line, but could not catch up as they trailed 66-53 heading into the final quarter. Hope posted a plus-five advantage through the final 10 minutes to complete the 83-64 victory.

Three Vikings earned double-digit points, with Cali Papez snatching a double-double with 11 points and 10 rebounds. Beinborn grabbed 16 points, while Kadence Tatum collected 11 points, eight rebounds, nine assists, and one steal. Kylee DeVore swatted three of the team's four blocks.

With the loss, Augie sits at 6-5 on the season. The Vikings will battle Alma on Wednesday at 4 p.m. CST.
