Women’s basketball bounces back with win over Alma

HOLLAND, Mich. -- The Augustana Vikings women's basketball team concluded their time in Michigan with a non-conference win over the Alma Scots on Wednesday by a score of 60-52.

Both teams started the competition with a strong offensive side, with Augie securing a one-point lead after 10 minutes of play. The Vikings held a 56 percent shooting percentage in the frame and held Alma to just 37 percent, but the Scots found a slight advantage behind the arc, swishing one more shot than the Vikings and posting a plus-four margin at the free throw line. Augie led 21-20 after 10 minutes of play.

In a low scoring second period, the Vikings earned 10 points and held the Scots to seven to increase the gap to four points. The first half closed out with a jump shot from Corey Whitlock in the paint to help boost her total to eight points so far in the contest. Macy Beinborn also calculated eight points and Kadence Tatum had seven.

Alma returned from the break and outscored Augie 16-11 in the third, which granted the edge to the Scots going into the last 10 minutes of play. Both teams put up an offensive battle in the third as the game was tied five times, but Alma took the final lead of the quarter with two points from the free throw line. Alma took a 43-42 lead into the final frame.

The Vikings had a dominant finish to close the game, doubling up the Scots 18-9 in the fourth. Augustana raced out to a lead of points with less than three minutes to go, but Alma's full-court pressure allowed them to pull back within four. Made free throws from Tatum and Beinborn down the stretch to go with consecutive defense stops helped the Vikings hang on for the win. Augie held Alma to just 24 percent shooting for the game and 14 points less than their season average.

Three Vikings secured double-digit points as Beinborn led with 23 points, nine rebounds, and two assists. Whitlock followed with 12 points and five rebounds, while Emma Berg obtained 10 points and three rebounds. Cali Papez also hauled in 10 boards.

With the victory, Augie improves to 7-5 on the season. The Vikings will be back in conference play on January 3 as they head to Elmhurst, Ill. to face off against the Elmhurst Blue Jays.
