ROCK ISLAND -- The Augustana Vikings men's basketball team earned an overtime victory over the Lake Forest Foresters on Sunday night, winning by a score of 84-83.
It was a back-and-forth start to the contest, with neither team holding a lead of more than one possession until Lake Forest grabbed a 14-10 advantage seven minutes in. Augustana eventually caught up and went out in front for a brief moment at 24-23, but an 11-0 scoring run from the visitors allowed them to secure the game's largest margin of nine points. Lake Forest maintained its separation for the remainder of the half before a late jumper from
Tyler Knuth cut the deficit to seven at a halftime score of 42-35. The Foresters shot nearly 58 percent in the opening half compared to Augie's 44 percent mark.
The Vikings quickly shrunk the differential to begin the second half leading up to a 44-44 deadlock after just three minutes played. From there, Lake Forest posted several small scoring spurts, holding a lead of four on four different occasions before stretching it out to six with just over 10 minutes to go. Despite pulling even several times over the course of the next few minutes, the Vikings could not move ahead until consecutive free throws from
Zach Anderson made it a 75-74 game with 3:16 showing on the clock. After a couple of made baskets both ways, the Foresters grabbed a two-point lead with less than 90 seconds remaining. A layup from
Mike Hamilton at 55 seconds tied the game back up at 79 points apiece and served as the final points either team scored in regulation.Â
Tied at 79, Lake Forest struck first in the extra session with a made jumper, but was quickly answered with the equalizer on a made shot from Knuth. After two minutes of scoreless play, the Foresters again went out in front, but on the ensuing possession, the Vikings secured the lead on a three-pointer from
Chase Larsen in the corner. A pair of defensive stops followed for the Vikings to seal the win for Augustana.
Knuth led all scorers with a game-high 26 points on 9-12 shooting, while Hamilton and Larsen both added double figures with 14 and 12 points. Hamilton also contributed nine rebounds and four assists. Augustana shot 57 percent from the floor in the second half and hit 54.5 percent from behind the three-point line for the game.
Augustana improves to 3-8 with the win and will remain home for their next game on Thursday against No. 23 Illinois College.
