Women’s basketball secures big win over Monmouth

MONMOUTH, Ill. -- The Augustana Vikings women's basketball team earned its second straight win on Tuesday, defeating the Monmouth Fighting Scots on the road by a score of 76-45. 

The Vikings were quick to get on the board as Emma Berg took a shot from deep in the first 15 seconds to put Augie on the board first. The Vikings saw a big advantage from behind the three-point line, making four of their seven shots while holding the Scots without a make. The team also saw a balanced effort on the glass, snatching eight defensive and five offensive rebounds in the quarter.

In the second, Augie maintained a strong offensive effort against the Scots, shooting 58.3 percent on field goals while Monmouth only achieved 30.8 percent. Monmouth cut the margin down to as many as five with a strong showing from the free throw line, but an 18-14 quarter for Augie pushed its halftime lead to 34-21.

The Vikings played an aggressive quarter of defense in the third, generating five steals and a block while holding Monmouth to just 15-21 shooting. The Vikings had their best offensive quarter of the game in the third with 29 points on 48 percent shooting to extend the lead to 28 heading into the fourth.

The fourth quarter brought a defensive battle, with the Vikings winning by a final margin of 13-10 through the final 10 minutes to complete the 76-45 final. The Augie defense continued to shine in the period, holding Monmouth to just three made shots on 18 attempts. For the game, the Vikings held the Scots to 21 percent from the field.

Nine different Vikings contributed scores in the win, with Macy Beinborn leading the way with 17 points. Kadence Tatum narrowly missed out on a triple-double, ending with 16 points, 11 rebounds, and nine assists to go with four steals. Carly Stone also added 15 points. Cali Papez also contributed a double-double with 11 points and 12 rebounds. Augustana out-rebounded Monmouth 51-25 in the win.

The Augustana Vikings women's basketball team will be back in the Roy J. Carver Center on Thursday for the non-conference continuation as they face off against UW-Platteville. Tip-off is set for 7 p.m.
