Women's basketball stumbles vs. UW-Platteville

ROCK ISLAND – The Augustana Vikings women's basketball team was defeated at home on Thursday, falling to the visiting UW-Platteville Pioneers by a score of 83-74.

Carly Stone was the first to score in the game as the two teams played to a high-scoring first quarter that saw Platteville leading 20-17. Both teams saw success from behind the three-point as each shot over 40 percent in the opening 10 minutes of action, with the Viking connecting on 3-5 looks for a 60 percent mark.

The Pioneers were quick to fire in the second quarter, increasing the gap to seven until Augie inched back again with a Stone three-pointer. UW-Platteville continued to a hold a lead, growing it to as many as seven before an 8-3 run from the Vikings cut the deficit to five heading into the halftime break. Each team made seven field goals and two threes in the frame, but a plus-two difference at the free throw line for the Pioneers allowed them to extend their margin.

In the third period, the Pioneers continued to shoot well from the field, knocking down 50 percent of their looks while holding Augie to just 37.5 percent. Augie took the upper hand in rebounds in the quarter snatching nine from the glass, but Platteville extended their lead to nine going into the last quarter of the game. The fourth quarter featured the highest point total from each team as the two played to a 29-29 draw through the final 10 minutes of action. The Vikings got within five points after falling behind by 13 early one, but were unable to get closer as the Pioneers took the game 83-74.

Stone led the way for Augustana with 19 points, three assists, three steals, and five rebounds. Kadence Tatum registered a double-double with 13 points, 15 assists, two steals, and five rebounds.

The Vikings fall to 2-2 with the loss and will next travel to St. Louis, Mo. for a pair of non-conference battles against the Webster Gorloks and the Fontbonne Griffins on November 25 and 26.
