Vikings defeat Titans to move unbeaten streak to double digits

ROCK ISLAND -- The Augustana Vikings women's soccer team moved its unbeaten streak to 10 games on Wednesday, defeating the Illinois Wesleyan Titans by a score of 1-0. It is the first victory or the Vikings over the Titans since 2018, snapping a five-game losing streak in the series.

The two teams played to an even first half in the shots category, but after 22 minutes of scoreless action, Liesl Whitener notched her 12th goal of the season to put the Vikings out in front by a score of 1-0. Augustana posted a 6-5 advantage in shot attempts in the opening 45 minutes, but Illinois Wesleyan saw three of their five on target compared to Augie's two. The two teams continued to trade shots, but the 1-0 lead for the Vikings remained intact after one half of play.

Both teams upped their offensive looks in the second, with the Vikings this time owning a 7-5 advantage in the shots category. The Titans managed to send four of their five strikes on target, but Janey Castoe grabbed the final three of her six saves in the final half of action. The two teams played to a scoreless final 45 minutes as Augie held on for their eighth shutout victory of the season.

Whitener and Carson Kekelik led the Vikings in shots with three apiece, while Whitener's goal now serves as her sixth game-winning score of the season.

With the win, Augustana improves to 9-1-2 on the season. The team will hit the road for their next contest on Saturday, October 7 when they visit Millikin.
