MILWAUKEE, Wis. -- The Augustana Vikings women's volleyball team earned a pair of 3-0 wins on Saturday, defeating both the Edgewood Eagles and MSOE Red Raiders in a non-conference tri-match.
In the opener vs. Edgewood, the Vikings quickly won the race to 10 while holding the Eagles to just three points during that span. Edgewood strung together a run to cut the deficit to three at 14-11, but Augie created separation once and for all after answering with a 3-0 scoring spurt. The Vikings saw their lead dip to four at 19-15, but claimed the game with six consecutive points to take a 1-0 lead in the match.
A long and thrilling set ensued, resulting in a 35-33 victory for Augustana to move its advantage to 2-0. After playing to a 23-23 deadlock, Augie was the first to reach set point, but quickly Edgewood jumped out in front with four set points of their own in a row. The Vikings eventually broke a tie at 33 with back-to-back kills from
Amelie Baehr-Ross and
Emily Schipper. A late 7-0 run from Augie in game three turned a 17-16 lead for the Vikings into 24-16, later closing out the match win on a kill from
Alexis Richards.
Schipper and
Jaden Julius each had double-digit kills to lead the Vikings in the win, while Baehr-Ross averaged double figures in assists in the three-set win.
Grace Vranicar and Baehr-Ross were the dig leaders with 17 and 16, respectively.
In match two vs. MSOE, the Vikings pulled out in front after winning the closest set of the match by a score of 25-22. The two teams played a closely-fought battle, but the Vikings broke away from a 21-21 tie with three straight scores. MSOE notched a point to pull within two, but an attack error from the home team gave Augustana the 1-0 lead.
It was all Augie the following two sets. The Vikings broke away from a 15-12 game in the second, closing the frame with 10 of the final 11 points to claim a 2-0 advantage in the match. In the third, Augustana grabbed the first 12 points of the set and never looked back, taking their second win by double figures to complete their second sweep of the day.
Schipper was the team leader in kills with 12, while Vranicar tallied 18 digs.
Augustana improves to 21-5 with the wins and will return home for its next contest on Wednesday, November 1 when they host Millikin.
