ROCK ISLAND -- The Augustana Vikings women's soccer team will begin a stretch against three teams in the top four of the CCIW standings on Wednesday, October 18 when they host the Wheaton Thunder at Thorson-Lucken Field.
Augie enters with a record of 10-2-3 overall and 3-0-2 in conference play, recently seeing their 12-game unbeaten streak come to an end on Saturday in a 1-0 road loss to Grinnell. The Vikings and Pioneers played nearly a scoreless first half, but the home team notched the first and only goal in the 44th minute to bring a 1-0 lead into halftime. Grinnell held a 6-4 shot advantage through 45 minutes and saved three of the Vikings' attempts on target.
Augie saw three chances at the net in the second half, with two coming on goal, but could not find the equalizing shot as the Pioneers held on for the 1-0 victory.
Liesl Whitener and
Carson Kekelik led the team with two shots apiece.
Janey Castoe notched three saves.
Wheaton comes in with a 4-6-4 overall record by a 3-1-1 mark in the CCIW, sitting just behind Augustana in third place. The Thunder are riding a three-game unbeaten streak, recently defeating Carthage on the road by a score of 2-0. Wheaton has earned either a win or draw in six of its last eight outings.
The Vikings are 5-33-1 all-time against the Thunder. Augie snapped an eight-game winless streak against Wheaton last year with a 2-1 road victory.
