NAPERVILLE, Ill. -- The Augustana Vikings women's volleyball team earned a sweep to begin the Tiffany Robinson Memorial Tournament on Friday, defeating the St. Mary's (Minn.) Cardinals by set scores of 25-19, 25-16, 25-18.
It was a game of runs to begin the opening frame as Augie grabbed the first three points followed by four from the Cardinals. The Vikings went out in front for good with an ensuing 5-0 spurt, fueled by three straight kills from
Emily Schipper. The lead grew to as many as seven on three different occasions before closing out the set with a six-point victory.
Set two featured a more back-and-forth beginning prior to another big scoring outburst from the Vikings. Leading 9-8, Augie rattled off seven of the next eight points to pull away from St. Mary's and cruise to the nine-point win. The Cardinals got within three at 18-15, but a 7-1 run to close the game gave Augustana a 2-0 cushion in the match. The Vikings never trailed in set three, owning a differential as big as eight points before securing the sweep.
Schipper kept her streak of double-digit kills alive with 10 to lead the team, while
Syd Krueger added eight with a .500 hitting percentage to go with her seven blocks.
Amelie Baehr-Ross tallied 28 assists in the three sets.
With the win, Augie moves its winning streak to five matches and now sits 15-4 overall on the year. The team will be back in action tomorrow with a pair of contests against Crown and Trine.
