NAPERVILLE, Ill. -- The Augustana Vikings women's volleyball team earned their third sweep in as many matches over ther weekend, taking down both the Crown Polar Bars and Trine Thunder in consecutive sets.
In their first match of the day, the Vikings defeated the Polars in set scores of 25-12, 25-9, 25-17. Augie grabbed the first six points of the opening frame and never trailed the rest of the way. After Crown cut the margin to two points at 9-7, nine straight scores from the Vikings pushed their cushion out to double figures. The double-digit margin remained intact through the end to give the Vikings a 1-0 lead in the match.
Another dominant game ensued for Augustana, this time scoring nine of the first 10 points to create separation right away. The differential grew out to 14 points on four different occasions before a final 4-1 spurt at the end made it a 16-point victory. Crown held a small lead early on in the third and the two teams found themselves in a 9-9 tie. The two teams continued to trade rally wins until the Vikings pulled away slightly at an 18-16 score. Seven of the final eight points scored went in favor of Augustana to seal the 3-0 match win.
The Vikings hit .350 in the contest while holding the Polar Bears to -.013.
Alexis Richards led a balanced attack for Augie with eight kills, followed by seven from
Izzy Ehrlich, and six apiece from
Emily Schipper and
Jenny Dunder.
Kylie Collachia was the team leader in both assists and digs, finishing with 22 and 10, respectively.
In the second match of the day, the Vikings downed the Thunder by set scores of 25-17, 25-12, 25-21. After falling behind 6-3 early on in the match, another big scoring run turned the three-point deficit into a six-point advantage after a 9-0 burst flipped momentum. Trine got within five points or less two different times, but the Vikings held on to take the 1-0 lead in the match.
Augustana continued to use their momentum from first set wins with another dominant second. For the second straight set, the Vikings doubled up the Thunder at a 12-6 score and coasted the rest of the way, outscoring Trine 13-6 the rest of the way. The Vikings scored four points in a row to end the game and clinch another double-digit win on the day, seeing kills from both Schipper and Dunder during that span.
The Vikings needed to play catch-up in the third, falling behind by as many as five at 14-9. From there, seven straight points put Augie back out in front, seeing two kills from
Syd Krueger during the run while
Evey Gervase held serve. Later on and with the Vikings leading 22-20, the team secured three of the final four points, including back-to-back kills from
Grace Vranicar to secure the match win.
Schipper and Krueger led the way for the Vikings with 14 and 12 kills, while Krueger also added five blocks.
Amelie Baehr-Ross averaged over 10 assists per game with 32. All three were named to the Tiffany Robinson Memorial All-Tournament Team.
With the wins, Augustana's win streak moves to seven matches. The team now sits at 17-4 overall and will be back in action on Friday, October 20 at No. 18 North Park.
