ROCK ISLAND -- The Augustana Vikings men's basketball team found themselves back in the win column on Sunday, picking up a 91-59 victory over the visiting Carroll Pioneers.
Carroll jumped out to an early 6-4 advantage, but never led again as the Vikings took control quickly, using a 10-0 run later on to grab their first double-digit lead of the contest at 26-16. The Pioneers chipped away at the deficit, cutting it back down to four at the 8:37 mark, but another scoring spurt from Augie stretched the margin back out to 10-plus, where it remained the rest of the way. Leading 41-28, the Vikings tallied the half's final 11 points, fueled two three-pointers from
Tyler Knuth and four points from Larsen. Both Knuth and Larsen put up double figures in scoring after 20 minutes of action, with Knuth notching 19 of his game-high 25 points in the first. The junior hit six of his shots in the opening frame and connected on five three-pointers. The Vikings led 52-28 at the break.
The Pioneers were responsible for the first two made baskets of the second half, but the Vikings quickly cushioned their advantage back out to their largest of the game at 26 thanks to a converted and-one from Larsen. The two teams battled back-and-forth through the first 10 minutes, with Carroll trimming the deficit to 18. Augustana countered with 12 unanswered points, seeing their lead grow to 30 at the time. The Vikings hovered around the 30-point differential before getting it to as many as 34 before ending with their largest margin of victory this season.
A total of 11 players reached the scoring column for the Vikings, led by Knuth's career-high 25. It is the third time this season he has reached 20-plus points in an outing. Larsen finished his night with 17 points, while
Daniel Carr secured another double-double with 13 points and 13 rebounds.
Nate Henry was the team's top scorer off the bench, finishing with nine points in 17 minutes. As a team, the Vikings eclipsed 50 percent from both the field (50.7%) and behind the three-point line (54.5%). The 36 made shots and 12 made threes are both season-highs for Augustana.
With the victory, the Vikings improve to 4-11 on the season and 2-4 in CCIW action. The team will have almost a week off before hitting the road to take on the Illinois Wesleyan Titans on Saturday, January 14. Tip time is scheduled for 4:15 p.m. from Bloomington, Ill.
