ROCK ISLAND -- The Augustana Vikings men's basketball team will remain at home on Sunday, January 8 when they welcome in the Carroll Pioneers for another CCIW matchup.
The Vikings enter with a 3-11 record and 1-4 mark in conference following an 83-69 home defeat to North Central on Wednesday. Augie jumped out to a double-digit lead in the first half, but were met with a late run from the Cardinals to make it a 38-37 game at half. The two teams played a back-and-forth game through the opening minutes of the second half, but a scoring outburst from North Central broke a 52-52 tie as they cushioned their advantage to double figures, eventually claiming the 14-point win.
Matt Hawkins led the Vikings in scoring, notching 18 of his game-high 22 points in the second half.
Carroll currently sits 4-9 overall and 1-3 in the CCIW. The Pioneers are coming off a big win over first-place and undefeated-in-conference Carthage on Wednesday, winning by a score of 72-66 at home. The Pioneers broke away from the Firebirds with the final four points of the game to win by six. The victory snapped a two-game skid for Carroll, previously falling to Millikin by a point and Lake Forest by six. The Pioneers are 2-4 away from home this season.
Augustana has doubled up Carroll in the all-time series, leading 60 wins to 30. The two teams split their meetings a season ago, each winning on the other's home floor. Augustana won in Waukesha 72-61 before the Pioneers edged the Vikings in Rock Island by a final of 69-68. Augustana has won eight of the last 12 encounters.
Start time is scheduled for 4:15 p.m. from inside the Carver Center.
