DECATUR, Ill. -- The Augustana women's basketball team fell on Saturday in their conference contest to the Millikin Big Blue by an 81-63 final score.
Augie jumped to an 11-4 lead in the opening frame, with
Corey Whitlock sending in three buckets during that span. Millikin pushed back, responding with a 14-4 run of their own to exit the opening period plus-four on the scoreboard. The second quarter saw efficient offense from both teams, with the Vikings shooting at a 50 percent clip, their highest of the game. Despite the shooting mark, the Big Blue successfully stretched their advantage by five to hold a 41-33 advantage into the half.
With 1:38 remaining in the
third quarter, Macy Beinborn cashed in a record-breaking shot from range. Beinborn moved into first place on the all-time list for career three-point makes, passing Kristen Pence with 146. Beinborn's journey took 19 fewer games than Pence, who played from 2001-2005. Augie trailed by 14 entering the fourth period and were unable to get the score under that margin as Millikin remained undefeated in the CCIW with the 81-63 victory.
The Vikings had multiple scorers eclipse double-figures, led by
Gabriela Loiz's 15-point effort.
Whitlock and Carly Stone were close behind with 14, while Beinborn added 10. Emily Brenneisen led the team on the glass with seven boards to her name and led the team in assists with six.
With the defeat, Augustana moves to 11-7 on the season and 5-4 in conference play. The Vikings return home for a matchup with Elmhurst on Wednesday, looking to sweep the season series after toppling the Bluejays by 51 points on January 4. The conference contest in the Carver Center is set for 7:00 p.m.
