ROCK ISLAND -- The Augustana women's basketball team secured a conference home win over Elmhurst on Wednesday night, toppling the Bluejays by a 76-33 final score.
Both Augie and Elmhurst exchanged baskets to begin the game, but the Vikings pulled away with a 16-2 scoring run to close the period to give them a plus-12 point differential after 10 minutes of action. Augustana's defense clamped down on the Bluejays in the second quarter, allowing just five points on 11 field goal tries.
Macy Beinborn scored 11 points to help the Vikings build a 46-14 advantage at the halfway point. Augie held Elmhurst to just 6-29 shooting in the first half and 2-13 from behind the arc.
The Vikings' dominance continued in the second half, amassing a 45-point lead heading into the final period.
Cali Papez highlighted Augie's inside presence, scoring six of the final seven field goals and 12 of her game-high 18 points in the third quarter alone. Both teams emptied their benches in the fourth as Augustana's continued to contribute to their scoring total. The Vikings ended the game with 40 points from their reserves, helping the team coast to the 43-points victory.
Augie had two scorers break double-figures, led by Papez with 18 and Beinborn with 13. A total of 11 different Vikings scored in the contest. Augie had five players bring down at least five rebounds, with
Gabriela Loiz and Papez snagging six, while
Presley Case,
Corey Whitlock, and Beinborn each grabbed five.
With the win, Augustana moves to 12-7 on the season and 6-4 in conference play. The Vikings will remain home for a matchup with Illinois Wesleyan on Saturday, January 28. The conference matchup is set for 5:00 p.m. from inside the Carver Center.
