Vikings earn fourth-consecutive CCIW Tournament berth

1/2/2023 3:00:00 PM

The Augustana Vikings women's soccer team concluded their 2022 campaign with its fourth-straight winning season and fourth-consecutive trip to the CCIW postseason tournament. The Vikings concluded the season with a 9-6-4 overall record and 3-2-3 mark in conference play, earning them fifth.

Augustana split its first four games of the season before earning their first back-to-back wins of the year against Monmouth and Simpson. The Vikings earned a couple of wins during that span in which they were out-shot, defeating Central College on the road to begin the season by a score of 2-1. The Dutch posted 17 shots to the Vikings' six, but goals from seniors Kayla Garcia and Molly Fank gave Augie the road victory. On September 14, the Vikings found themselves in a similar position against the Simpson Storm. The Vikings tallied two first-half goals to hang on for the 2-1 win despite being out-shot 27-6. Janey Castoe notched a career-best 10 saves in net.

Following a road loss at Lawrence, the Vikings bounced back with a four-game unbeaten streak, earning draws against UW-Platteville and North Park before defeating Illinois College and Carthage. The Vikings boasted their highest-scoring outing of the season at Illinois College, winning by a score of 7-1. Liesl Whitener earned a hat trick to lead the team.

Augustana dropped two in a row following their four-game unbeaten streak, but answered with another stretch without losing a game. The Vikings rattled off three wins in a row over Elmhurst, Adrian, and Wheaton before grabbing draws to close the season against Carroll and regionally-ranked North Central. The Vikings 2-1 road win over Wheaton was the program's first over Thunder since 2015. The game combined three combined penalty kick goals, with the game-winner coming from Kim Vulic in the 85th minute.

The successful end to the regular season helped earn the Vikings the No. 5 seed in a jam-packed CCIW race, setting up a return visit to Carroll for the second time in a week to begin the CCIW Tournament. Like the first meeting, the two teams played a scoreless 90 minutes of action to force overtime. This time, the Pioneers secured a game-winner, sending one into the back of the net in the 99th minute to advance to the next round and end Augustana's season.

Three members of the team earned All-CCIW recognition following the 2022 season, the the fourth-straight that Augustana has had at least three members earn all-conference. Whitener notched First Team honors, the 18th straight season the Vikings have had at least one student-athlete land on First Team. The junior leads the team with eight goals and five assists in 2022 despite missing five games. She also ranked second on the Vikings in shots with 40, with 22 coming on target. She sat  in the top six in the CCIW in goals, assists, and points and was top ten in both shots and shots on goal, having played the least amount of games of anyone on those lists. Vuilc and Fank both were named to the CCIW's All-Conference Second Team. It was the second-straight season earning all-conference for Fank. Maeve Sheridan was this year's recipient of the CCIW's RESPECT Award.

Following the conclusion of the season, Whitener, Fank, and Sheridan were named to the College Sports Communicators Academic All-District list. Whitener also earned All-Region from United Soccer Coaches.
