ROCK ISLAND, Ill. -- The Augustana Vikings women's tennis team was defeated by the Wheaton Thunder on Saturday in each team's CCIW opener, falling by a score of 8-1 at the Lower Campus Courts.
The Thunder took two of three doubles matches for an early 2-1 lead in the match. Augie grabbed a win at No. 2 doubles as
Caitlyn Hanulikova and
Lauren Oda defeated their opponent by a score of 8-7(3).
All six singles matches went in favor of the road team.
Lily Schoeck bounced back from a 6-0 first-set defeat at No. 1 singles to force a third set, but fell by a score of 6-2 after winning the second 6-4.
Natasha Gauerke nearly forced a third set with a hard-fought effort in her second set. She was defeated at No. 5 singles by a score of 6-3, 7-6(2).
With the loss, Augie falls to 0-1 to begin the season. The Vikings will be back in action on September 16 at Illinois Wesleyan. Start time is scheduled for 3:30 p.m. from Bloomington, Ill.
