Seven-run second inning lifts Vikings to victory at Carthage

Boushele fans 10, offense explodes for 13 runs

KENOSHA, Wis. – Augustana baseball (28-9, 10-6) exploded for 13 runs and scored in all but one inning during their 13-0 blowout win over Carthage (12-25, 5-11) earlier today. The Vikings also featured dominant pitching in their tenth conference victory of the year.

Leadoff hitter Jacob Barker started the scoring in the very first at bat of the game with a solo shot home run. The next innings, the Firebirds found out there was more where that came from. Matt Ozanic began the frame with a two-RBI single before Chase Maifield was hit by a pitch to plate Alex Simon. Brett Benedetti then knocked two more in on another single. Alec McGinnis joined the action with an RBI double to the left-center gap. Finally, Kyle Wise grounded out but Benedetti scampered home to make the score 8-0.

After a scoreless third, the Vikings' only inning without at least one run, McGinnis singled Maifield in. Kyle Campbell contributed in the fifth with a double down the right field line to score Ozanic. In the sixth, Benedetti scored on a wild pitch. Simon and Ozanic then did the same in the seventh to reach the final 13-0 tally.

Five Vikings recorded multiple base hits led by Matt Ozanic's 3-for-5 day. Simon, Benedetti, McGinnis, and Zachary Vrbancic all had two hits. Ozanic also led the team with three runs scored and was tied with Benedetti and McGinnis with a team-high two RBI.

Harrison Boushele pitched a near-perfect six innings in a winning effort. The sophomore right-hander fanned 10 Firebirds while allowing just two hits and no walks in his fifth victory of the season. Anthony Sus closed things out with another nearly flawless seventh inning including two K's.

The Vikings will finish the regular season tomorrow with a double-header at Wheaton starting at 1:00 P.M.
