ROCK ISLAND, Ill. -- The Augustana Vikings women's tennis team split a pair of non-conference matches on Saturday at the Lower Campus Courts, falling in the opening contest to the Illinois Tech Scarlet Hawks by a score of 6-3, followed by a 7-2 win over the Central Dutch.
Match One (L 6-3 vs. Illinois Tech)
The Scarlet Hawks (13-4) started the opening match with two out three wins in doubles, grabbing victories in the No. 1 and 3 spots. Augie salvaged a win at No. 2 as
Lauren Oda and
Grace Rider defeated their opponent 8-6. Illinois Tech led 2-1 heading into singles.
Wins at the top two and bottom two singles positions were more than enough for the Scarlet Hawks to secure the match victory. The Vikings tallied a pair of victories at No. 3 and No. 4, led by
Caitlyn Hanulikova at No. 3 with a 6-3, 6-4 consecutive-set triumph. Oda continued her success in the match, winning a thriller at No. 4 with a final of 6-1, 4-6, 1-0 (9).
Match Two (W 7-2 vs. Central)
Augie bounced back with a strong start against the Dutch (11-11), sweeping doubles play to take a 3-0 advantage into singles. The duo of
Michaela Magee and
Mia Reese squeaked out a close 8-7 (4) win at No. 3 to make it a perfect start for the Vikings.
In singles, positions 1-4 resulted in victories for Augustana, all in consecutive sets.
Lily Schoeck picked up a win at No. 1 to help lead the team to the 7-2 win, while Magee, Hanulikova, and Oda all grabbed one as well.
With Saturday's results, the Vikings sit at 7-13 on the season. Augustana will be back in action on Sunday, April 24 for their final non-conference contest of the year on the road at Luther. Start time is scheduled for 2:00 p.m. from Decorah, Iowa.
