Augie baseball to host Sunday double-header versus Elmhurst, Cornell

Weather issues force Vikings into weekend two-gamer

ROCK ISLAND, Ill. – Augustana baseball (16-5) will take on Elmhurst University on Sunday to continue their current home stand. The Vikings will then battle Cornell College following the CCIW contest to complete the Sunday double-header.
 
Prior to this weekend's action, Elmhurst holds an 8-10 overall record and 1-3 mark in conference play. The Bluejays have lost five of their last six games including their most recent tilt, an 11-9 defeat at Carroll. Elmhurst's last win came on Monday, Apr. 4 in an 11-9 victory of their own at Wheaton.
 
Trey Romay and Freddie March lead the Bluejays with impressive batting averages of .491 and .406, respectively. March also leads the team in slugging percentage (1.043), runs scores (23), hits (28), RBI (32), triples (2), total bases (72), and home runs (12). Those 12 homers are also tied for second-most in NCAA Division III.
 
On the mound, both Noah Jordan and Jaysn Miller have thrown 25.1 innings this season. Miller leads Elmhurst with 24 strikeouts while Jordan has the second-best earned run average at 5.33. Both hurlers have earned two wins on the year.
 
Augie and Elmhurst have played against each other 95 times since 1981. The Vikings hold a 57-38 advantage in the all-time series.

The Vikings will conclude the weekend's action against Cornell. The Rams bring a 6-11 overall record to Swanson Stadium. Cornell is coming off a 2-1 series victory over Simpson College including a 9-8 extra-inning thriller last weekend.
 
Cornell also boasts a trio of .300+ hitters led by Kale Rose at .381, Drew Logel at .341, and James Kent at .310. Logel and Kent also slug over the .600 mark and have each hit three home runs. Kent leads the Rams in various other categories including RBI with 16, runs scores with 15, doubles with 7, and total bases with 36. Rose has recorded a team-best 24 hits and two triples.
 
Kole Hinrichsen and Jake Schope have been the primary arms for Cornell with 33.1 and 29.1 innings pitched, respectively. Hinrichsen has struck out 34 opposing hitters while Schope has fanned 21. Bobby Petersen leads the Cornell staff with a 2.84 earned run average and .208 opposing batting average.
 
Augustana and Cornell have squared off 21 times since 1977. The Vikings have owned the all-time series with a 19-2 advantage. Cornell picked up their only two wins over Augie in 1988 and the most recent game, an 11-10 contest in 2019.
